Looking back on senior traditions before looking forward.
By: Alison Genske & Brynlee Williams

The class of 1993 spilled oil throughout the hallways as their senior prank. The class of ‘93 was not able to step foot in the school after they did this, people slipped and fell.  Imagine bouncy balls dropped into the lunch room from the catwalk on spaghetti day or picture goldfish swimming  right before you took a dip. These were some of the senior pranks that have gone wrong throughout Dexter’s history. Senior traditions have been around for centuries at Dexter schools. Some traditions have lasted years, others are just starting, and some have been lost through the years.  One of the traditions that has been lost throughout the years is “the rock” This is probably the most missed tradition because it added publicity to the school. Senior Veronica Wilson said, “I really want to bring back the rock and not have as many restrictions.” After she said this she was explaining how she wants to have a more exciting senior year but still has made many memories so far. Unfortunately for students, the rock was moved in November 2020 because people were writing inappropriate and politically charged messages. When DHS still had the rock, students said it created a bonding experience for many in the senior classes. This tradition was so much fun, seniors said, to use their creative ideas and join together to make art.

Other traditions that got canceled are Anything But A Backpack Day, Bring Your Pet to School Day, and Park Like a Dumb Person Day. All these traditions got canceled because they caused too much of a distraction to the rest of the students in the school. So many senior students said that they wish all these traditions would return to make their senior year more exciting. Mallory Brandt said “I want my senior year to be like a movie.”  With all of these traditions getting taken away it makes their senior year not as special as past years when they got to do all of the traditions they wanted to do. This makes it seem like just another year of high school.

Principal Melanie Nowak said “As the administration of the building, we must always put the safety and security of our students and staff at the center of all decisions.” As she said  she will always put the security of the school before anything fun. “Bad parking day violates school policy. We are also always dealing with bad drivers and close calls.”  These are some of the reasons we can’t do some of the traditions that we all love.

Most of the senior’s favorite tradition is the Clap Out because they get to go through all the schools and relive all their past years. This tradition can be a little sentimental because you might be leaving DHS for good, so you want to make the most of your last day so you can remember it forever. You get to remember everything that you went through to get to your final destination: graduation.
