With nearly 250 students responding, Democrat Marianne Williamson was the students’ most popular pick based on candidates on the Michigan Primary ballot. Democrat President Joe Biden was a close second while Republican and 45th President Donald Trump was third

The vote says… a change in scenery! When asked if they had to vote now
for the 2024 President, Dexter High School students made a surprising
choice. With 29% of the vote, Democrat Marianne Williamson received the most votes out of 245 students. Current President Joe Biden received 26.5% of the vote, while the 45th President Donald Trump received 18%.

The voting results somewhat align with party affiliation. When asking what party they affiliate themselves with, 43.3% of students said they affiliated with the Democratic Party while slightly less than one quarter (23.7%) aligned with the Republican Party. The remaining vote went towards “other,” which could represent being an Independent, the Green Party, or another.

Williamson is running to become the first female president ever in office. In her campaign, she vows to end the War On Drugs, implement a federal minimum wage increase, add reparations for racial injustice, address climate change, and create a U.S. Department of Peace. With her slogan bring: “A New Beginning: Disrupt the system dedicated to the people.”

While he didn’t say whether he would or wouldn’t vote for Williamson, sophomore Cayden Cappelli wouldn’t vote for a familiar candidate.

”I would like a younger voice that would be able to represent the youth of our country,” Cappelli said.

Current President Joe Biden is 81 while former President Trump is 77. Williamson isn’t that much younger as she is 71.

In the case of Williamson winning, Michigan would be a blue state for the eighth time in nine years. However, Michigan has not always been blue.

Michigan is well known as being a “swing state.” In fact, since 1948, Michigan has voted Democrat 10 times and Republican 9 times.

In the 21st century, Michigan has been a Democratic State 5 out of 6 times; however, between 1948 and 1996, Michigan voted Republican 8 out of 13 times.
