The inside scoop of Queen Elizabeth II’s death and its effect on DHS students
WRITTEN BY SYDNEY WINDER
On September 8, Her Majesty, the Queen of England passed peacefully at Balmoral Castle. Her death shocked not only those in her kingdom but those watching from around the world.
The Queen was 96 at the time of her death and reports say that she died of “old age.” She had reportedly been ill the morning of her passing, and doctors told Her Majesty’s family that they were concerned for her health. Her family was rushed to her bedside, and just a few hours later, she passed peacefully. The funeral was held on the on September 19, and she was laid peacefully to rest at Windsor Castle next to her late husband, who had passed in April of 2021, and her parents. Over 90 world leaders attended her funeral as well. Hundreds of people lined the streets outside of the castle sending their condolences to the Royal Family and saying their goodbyes to their beloved queen.
Although Her Majesty’s death came as a surprise to others, to some students at DHS it wasn’t a surprise at all.
“She was pretty old, so I kind of assumed she’d pass at some point,” junior JP Assenmacher said when asked if he was surprised by the Queen’s passing.
Senior Jaelyn Henry highlights how the Queen’s passing affected some on a deeper level than others.
“I was sad for like an hour, then I was fine.” Henry said.
The Queen’s health had been steadily declining for the past few months, and she was approaching 100 years old. Some say that the passing of the King the previous year may have had something to do with her passing when she did. Some are taking the phrase “dying from a broken heart” literally.
English Teacher Mr. Barry Mergler had an interesting story about the Queen and her passing.
“My in-laws were in England when this happened,” he said. “They had just arrived when she passed away.”
The new King of England, King Charles III, legally became king right after the Queen passed, but he has yet to be crowned. King Charles will officially be crowned on May 6, 2023.
The planning for this coronation is thought to be a longer process since there hasn’t been a coronation since the late Queen was crowned in 1953.
The first in line to become king after King Charles would be Prince William, King Charles’s oldest son. King Charles is 73 so he will be the oldest monarch ever to take the throne. King Charles is married to Camilla Parker Bowles or Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, however, she will now be referred to as Queen Camilla.
