Alyssa Gullekson, “Hair good = Play good”

Senior Alyssa Gullekson is a starting guard for the Dexter Varsity Basketball team. Alyssa has been playing basketball since she was in first grade. The season is three to four months long, so typically her sports bag is full of things. Some of the things are essentials, and others, are things that were thrown in there over time.

One thing Alyssa needs to have in her bag at all times is her hair necessities. Alyssa’s hair is always on point and that fuels her performance in games. If her hair looks good, she plays good. Gullekson also likes to keep food in her bag. She enjoys cheese and crackers, and interestingly, just plain tortillas.

Alyssa likes to set up her bag after tryouts, when she gets her uniforms, and then she organizes her whole bag. Once she sets it up for the season, Alyssa never cleans it out until it’s time to give the bags back at the end. Sometimes, she can find a bunch of random stuff in her bag while cleaning it out.

Inside Alyssa’s Bag?: 1 – Phone. 2 – Extra Clothes. 3 – Hair-
spray. 4 – Perfume. 5 – Angel clip (“My friend’s mom gave this to
me when I turned 16. It’s to protect you from crashes and stuff.”)
6 – Airpods. 7 -Chapstick. 8 – Regular Hair Tie. 9 – Nail Clippers.
10 – Car Keys. 11 – Lucky Hair Tie (“I have a lucky hair tie that’s
broken, but I keep it. I’ve just worn it every game since middle
school, but now it broke so now I just keep it in my shirt for
games”). 12 – Hair Clips/Barrettes. 13 – Ball for Rolling Out. 14 –
Pre Wrap. 15 – Deodorant. 16 – Basketball Shoes. 17 – Her Bag.
Ruby Boynton, “Clean Bag = Peace of Mind”

Ruby Boynton, third-year junior captain of the Dexter Varsity Dance Team, has been dancing since she was 7. She dances a total of about 18 1⁄2 hours each week. Between the dance team and studio dance, Ruby has a full schedule.

The dance team gets new bags every two years. Ruby likes to use the dance team backpack instead of switching between two for studio and team. She prides herself on the fact that she cleans her bag out once a month while most of her teammates clean their bags out once a year. Dance bags can get messy throughout the season, so Ruby likes to keep up with it.

The dance team’s season starts around April and ends at the beginning of February. Ruby not only dances with the school, she also dances studio at Dancers Edge. The studio season is all year round and Ruby often never has a break. She believes it’s important to keep her bag clean so she knows where everything is.

Inside Ruby’s Bag?: 1 – Turners. 2 – Dance Team photo. 3
– Competition Flyer. 4 – Bag. 5 – Practice Poms. 6 – Leotard. 7
-Tap shoes. 8 – Socks. 9 – Pretzels. 10 – Phone. 11 – Wallet/Keys
12 – Money. 13 – Deodorant. 14 – Hot Chocolate (“As of now
there’s a packet of hot cocoa because I stole it from the front
desk.”). 15 – Hand sanitizer. 16 – Hair Ties. 17 – Lotion. 18 –
Advil. 19 – Chapstick. 20 – Practice Dress. 21 – Ballet Shoes. 22
– Knee Exercises. 23 – Water bottle. 24 – Tights.
Brody Gordon, “Locker over Bag”

Junior Brody Gordon, who has been playing hockey for 11 years, is a member of Dexter’s team. He started playing hockey when he was four because he grew up watching the NHL (National Hockey League) with his brother. Since then, he has fallen in love with the sport.

A typical high school hockey player uses their locker in the team’s locker room to store all their equipment rather than using their big bulky bag. Their bag is only used for away games.

Hockey requires lots of equipment for things on and off the ice. Shown in the video below is what Gordon keeps in his hockey bag and his locker.
