Some senior athletes choose to play their sport at the collegiate level, while others will not

About 64.2% of seniors play a sport at Dexter High School, according to the Squall senior survey. Many seniors take different, unique paths when going from high school to college. Here are some stories…
Bethany Simons – Calvin Track And Field

Bethany Simons is committed to Calvin University to pole vault on the Track and Field team.
When asked why she wanted to continue pole vaulting she said, “I just love the environment and the people that are in it. I feel like it’s a great chance to meet people from other grades and there’s so many different areas of track that you can do, so there’s a lot of community in general.”
Bethany also mentioned that she liked Calvin University because of the small campus and the five-year master’s program for her major, Speech Pathology.
“I knew that I wanted to work with kids, but I was thinking more one-on-one than like a teacher, and I also knew that I
probably didn’t want to do medical stuff, so it seemed like a good option,” Bethany said.
In all, she is most excited to meet new people in college.
Evan Haroldson – Indiana Tech Basketball

Evan Haroldson is also taking his sport to the collegiate level by playing basketball at Indiana Tech. He really liked their competition level and their campus.
“I think it’ll be fun to get out a little bit and kind of be living on my own. I think, overall, college will be fun. And the basketball piece of it, it’ll just be like playing at higher-competition events, better guys with better wires,” mentioned Evan, when asked what he was most excited for in the future.
In terms of his major, he has decided to get into Exercise Science. Evan has been in and out of injuries over the time of his basketball career, which was the main reason he wanted to get into this major, along with finding it an interesting area of study.
Braedy Wineman – DHS Soccer

Some other DHS seniors are not continuing to play their sport in college, and are focusing on other aspects of college, such as Braedy Wineman. Braedy is currently the goalie for our Dexter Women’s Varsity Soccer team.
When asked what her favorite thing about high school sports were, she said, “Getting to play with my friends that I’ve grown up with and you don’t have to take it as seriously. It’s mostly just having fun with people.” However, on the other hand, Braedy also said that “I really don’t like soccer… my position is really stressful as a goalie and whenever someone scores, I feel awful.”
Due to the tension in her sport, Braedy decided that it was an easy decision to not play soccer after high school. She is planning on attending the University of Michigan. Braedy grew up around the U of M culture and her dad is a graduate. She’s also involved in watching Michigan sports, such as football. She also mentioned that U of M has a “really good academic program,” so it has always been her first choice. Braedy is pursuing a degree in Pharmacy. “It was a recent decision,” she said. She was inspired by her dad’s friend, who works as a pharmacist, “I talked to her and she got me interested in it.” Braedy has always wanted to work in the medical field, and her recent decision to work with pharmacy will allow her to work in hospitals.
Kaden Jensen – DHS Cross Country

Kaden Jensen has decided to go to Michigan Technological University, to study Engineering Management.
Although he’s not planning to continue his running career at the next level, he said, “There’s a chance I still might be able to run track as a walk-on, but they don’t, as far as I know, have a cross country club. They do have a track club. I’ll still be running up there, just probably won’t be part of the team.”
Kaden also mentioned that Michigan Tech has a great location, and “a great atmosphere of clarity… I really felt at home on the campus and with the students.” Other things Kaden is excited about are the winter activities. “The long winter is a plus for me; there’s a lot of the winter sports that I couldn’t do here.” When Kaden was asked what he was looking forward to the most in college he talked about his major of Engineering Management.
“I decided to go with a major a little bit more business related so I can have the most amount of skills in case I wanted to go into a more business-related career or more engineering related career, I’d be able to do that.” He also mentioned that he is looking forward to, “working towards a degree and having a school that’s more meaningful,” because he likes to learn.
Kaden says that all the things he will learn in college about Engineering Management will be a motivational booster due to his future job using those skills.
