Matyas Toulec – Senior – Hockey

Matyas Toulec, an international student from the Czech Republic who has been playing hockey for 13 years, is a star on the Dexter hockey team (2-13-1). Toulec scored four goals in Dexter’s first win this season, a 5-1 victory against Pioneer on January 14.

“I was sure we were going to win,” Toulec said of the team’s mindset before the game. “I believed in our team… the guys were ready to win. We were really hyped before the game.”

Out of all 28 goals that Dexter has scored, Toulec has 17 of those. He also leads the team with 20 points (17 goals + 3 assists). Playing for the Dreads is more than just wins and losses for Toulec.

“I fell in love with the team as soon as I came here,” he said.

Alena Blumberg – Sophomore – Basketball

Sophomore Alena Blumberg is a big part of Dexter’s girls basketball team, and she showed this by scoring 30 points in a win over Plymouth Christian earlier this season.

“I had no idea what was going on really,” she said. “I just kept hitting threes and it just kept going and I was just on a roll. My teammates did a great job of helping me get there.”

However, Blumberg didn’t get her skill in Basketball from luck.

“I’ve been playing ever since pretty much I could walk.”

A team is what helps make an athlete, but it wasn’t a team that got Blumberg into basketball.

“My father played basketball in college, so he loved the game, and I was always just around, so I started playing.”

Trevor Jankovic – Sophomore – Powerlifting

Trevor Jankovic is a sophomore and a big part of the Dexter Powerlifting team. Jankovic has recently emerged victorious at the Grass Lake Powerlifting Meet, totaling 1,135 pounds from squat, bench, and deadlift.

“It feels great,” he said about the win. “I’ve been putting in a lot of hard work throughout the season. I finally got to go to the meet and show everything off.”

Trevor looks to continue his success in future powerlifting meets, especially the Iron Dread Regional Powerlifting Meet on Saturday, Feb. 18, at DHS.

Aidan McConnell – University Of Wisconsin Sophomore – Soccer

Dreadnaughts in the NCAA

Aidan McConnell just finished her sophomore year at Wisconsin. She tallied a team-high four assists while starting in all 18 games this fall while also being named to the AllBig Ten Tournament team. After starting all 22 games as a freshman, she was named to the U.S. roster for the CONCACAF Women’s Under 20-Championships.

“The college soccer experience has been an amazing opportunity that I know is special, and that I am very fortunate to be able to experience,” she said.

Despite the clear positives of being a D1 women’s soccer player, McConnell acknowledged that losing hurts more in college than it did in high school.

“You lose a game and you cannot just go to a different environment to forget about it,” she said. “You have to stay in the same environment.”
