Joey Tessmer – Senior – Football

Senior Joey Tessmer has been a big part of the currently undefeated Dexter football team this year. After taking two years off of the sport (already playing basketball, he picked up baseball and didn’t want to be playing three sports), Tessmer returned to the field.

“I’m very glad I’ve decided to come back,” Tessmer said, noting he will only be playing football and baseball this year. “I’ve been very lucky to be with a great group of guys, and great coaches.”

Tessmer has been a standout wide receiver with his best game coming against Lincoln. In the 45-0 September victory, Tessmer had five catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns (scores of 31 and 55 yards). Tessmer finished the regular season with 36 catches for 515 yards and eight touchdowns.

Emily Kate-Covert – Junior – Field Hocket

Emily Kate-Covert was a star for the Dreads field hockey team that just finished its season by winning the D2 State Championship and Kate-Covert has an assist in the 2-0 win against Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett. This is Dexter’s third title in four seasons. Earlier in the season Kate-Covert announced her commitment to the University of Iowa.

“It was exciting to bring my skills and abilities to help win the state title,” she said.

JP Assenmacher – Junior – Soccer

JP Assenmacher, a junior on the varsity soccer team, led the Dreads with 14 goals this season. Despite a finish to the year that the soccer team wasn’t hoping for – Dexter went 6-7-3 and lost in the first round of districts – Assenmacher said the season wasn’t all negative. His fondest memory was the senior night win against Bedford, a 4-2 victory where he scored a goal. He said that he enjoyed being a captain, the role of leadership, and that it was fun to help teach the younger players on the team; the majority of Dexter’s team were underclassmen.

“Our coaching strategy was to get the ball to me as soon as possible and play through me,” Assenmacher said.

Abby Tamer – U of M Sophomore – Field Hockey

Dreadnaughts in the NCAA

Abby Tamer, now a Sophomore at the University of Michigan, graduated from Dexter in 2020. Tamer is second on the Michigan field hockey team in goals (9) and is tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals.

“Collegiate sports are so physically and mentally challenging, but I’ve never been a part of something more rewarding.”

Michigan finished the regular season 14-5 and was the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Michigan lost a 2-1 OT heartbreaker to Albany in the first round.
