One gym. One day. Two games. That was the scenario on Friday, January 13, when both the women’s and men’s basketball teams played against their biggest rival, Chelsea, in a doubleheader.
Both games, which were incredibly intense with the result in doubt until the end, ended with Chelsea victories. The Bulldogs were able to pull ahead in the fourth quarter. The women’s team lost 62-47 while the men’s team fell 59-50.
For the women’s game, sophomore Alena Blumberg led the Dreads with 13 points while senior Chloe Perry added 12. Other scorers for Dexter included junior Heidi Fuchs (8), sophomore Kendall Cabana (6), junior Alyssa Gullekson (5), and freshman Addison Chase (3).
“Going into the game, we knew they were a tough team,” Perry said. “Obviously, they’re our rivals, so we gonna be upset. Hoping next time we play them that we’ll get them.”
The men’s game saw the Dreads jump ahead 10-0 from the onset. The first quarter was highlighted by freshman Jack Demerell’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the horn. Chelsea rallied in the fourth quarter for the victory. Dexter’s leading scorers in the loss were AJ Vaughn, Reeves Taylor, Garrett Sharp, Jack Demerell, and Evan Haroldson.
“Unfortunately, they made a comeback and won the game,” Taylor said. “The loss stung and we are going to use that loss as fuel when we play them again at the end of the season.”
