The men’s varsity baseball team is coming off a season which saw them go 19-17. The team has several returning players, but also has five players who are new to the team.

Head Coach Don Little said he thinks this year’s team doesn’t have as much experience as last year’s, but they make it up in speed and pitching.

“Last year’s team had more experience and had some very smart baseball players,” Little said. “This year’s team is younger and lacks the experience, but we have better speed. And I like our pitching.”

Senior Cole Rize concurs.

“This year’s team is a lot younger, and we have more speed on the base paths,” Rize said. “Last year, we were more of a heavy-hitting team and a lot bigger.”

And Little thinks the team can still compete, even with the lack of experience.

“I think we have the potential to be a very competitive team, depending on how fast the guys catch on and buy in to how we do things” he said.

Even with the changing dynamics of the team, Rize also said he thinks his team can compete in the SEC and in districts.

“I think we have a chance to go farther than last year,” Rize said. “I feel we come together more.”

Little also said his team can be successful with the shifting of talent.

“I think this team can compete for a SEC title as well as a district crown,” Little said. “A lot depends on the health of our pitching. I have four really strong pitchers and three younger guys with great potential, but sore arms are all too common, and if we stay healthy and throw strikes, we will be very competitive.”
