Throughout the years of DHS’s football program, the Dreads have gone through several head coaches, star players, playbooks, and weight room training regiments. However, there was little doubt within the program that the last four years have seen the Dexter football program on top of its game.
Dexter had made the playoffs each of the past four seasons (the only four playoff appearances in school history) on the heels of four straight 0-9 seasons.
Despite this newfound success, the Dreadnaughts hadn’t quite been able to close the gap and beat the Chelsea Bulldogs, losing by an average of almost 16 points each of the past four years.
That changed in 2022 with Dexter’s 45-0 victory. Prior to this year’s win, the last time Dexter walked off the field after defeating Chelsea was 1995. To put that in perspective, that was the year Windows 95 was launched, President Bill Clinton was still in his first term, and the average price of gas was $1.15.
Here’s a look at the unforgettable win in photos.
UP IN SMOKE: The student section enjoys a powder shower
before the opening kickoff.
WE BELIEVE: Senior Devon Emrick (99) leads Dexter onto the field while holding the American flag.
TOE THE LINE: Chelsea’s defensive line and Dexter’s offensive line prepare to
battle before the Dreads run an offensive play in the first quarter.
ROUGHING THE KICKER: Senior Gerzon Herter (8) attempts a field goal shortly before halftime against Chelsea. A Bulldogs defender (4) ran into Herter, allowing Dexter to re-try the field goal. Herter nailed his second attempt to give Dexter a 24-0 lead at half.
STUFFED: The Dexter defensive line gang tackles a Chelsea player.
THE BEST BATH: Seniors Corey Baker (97) and Devon Emrick (99) give
head coach Phil Jacobs a Gatorade bath late in the fourth quarter.
ALL IN THIS TOGETHER: (BOTTOM) In unison, the student section
puts their arms in the air and chants during a fourth quarter play.
CLOSE YOUR EYES: The student section cheers as the clock ticks toward 0:00.
Just as the student section sign read, the Dreads ‘Put the Dogs Down’ with an emphatic 45-0 victory.
